The KOOS-PS is a unidimensional 7-item scale that provides an efficient measure of physical function, derived from the full KOOS subscales.
Items are rated 0 (None) to 4 (Extreme). A raw sum score (0–28) is calculated first.
The raw sum score MUST be converted to a 0–100 interval score using the developer's nomogram to ensure scientific validity.
While the KOOS-PS is efficient for tracking "Physical Function," it lacks the "Symptoms," "Pain," and "Quality of Life" domains of the full KOOS. It is best used as a rapid screening tool rather than a comprehensive outcome measure.
Development of a short form of the KOOS (KOOS-PS) and WOMAC (WOMAC-PS) physical function subscales.
Transformed Physical Function Score
100 = No Difficulty • 0 = Extreme Difficulty
Rising from bed / getting in/out of bed
Putting on / taking off socks
Rising from a low chair
Getting in / out of a car
Going up / down stairs
Squatting
Running / jumping
Rasch Transformation: The KOOS-PS uses a non-linear interval scale. Raw scores (0-28) provide clinical data but must be transformed to the 0-100 percentage for validated reporting.
