ALLERFED

ALLERFED is a combination of an antihistamine (fexofenadine) and a decongestant (pseudoephedrine). Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist that blocks histamine effects, reducing allergy symptoms. Pseudoephedrine is a sympathomimetic amine that acts as a decongestant via alpha-adrenergic receptor activation, causing vasoconstriction of nasal mucosa.

Standard Dosing

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) cause an increased risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, including myocardial infarction and stroke, which can be fatal. This risk may increase with duration of use. Patients with cardiovascular disease or risk factors for cardiovascular disease may be at greater risk. NSAIDs are contraindicated for the treatment of perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

Second and third trimesters: potential uteroplacental vasoconstriction leading to fetal hypoxia; risk of prematurity and low birth weight.

Lactation Summary

Excreted in breast milk with M/P ratio of approximately 0.5. American Academy of Pediatrics considers compatible with breastfeeding; however, use with caution due to potential for irritability and drowsiness in infant.
