Cephalexin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death.
Cefoxitin is a cephamycin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), disrupting peptidoglycan cross-linking. It is resistant to many beta-lactamases.
250-500 mg orally every 6 hours for 10-14 days; maximum 4 g/day.
1-2 g IV every 6-8 hours. Maximum 12 g/day.
