Aphthasol (amlexanox) is an anti-inflammatory agent that inhibits the formation and release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine and leukotrienes from mast cells, neutrophils, and other inflammatory cells. It also inhibits the activation of eosinophils and neutrophils, and reduces cytokine production, thereby suppressing the immune response involved in aphthous ulcer formation.
BETAPRONE (propiolactone) is an alkylating agent that exerts its effects by cross-linking DNA and RNA, leading to inhibition of cellular replication and transcription. It also acts as a chemical sterilant by inactivating proteins and nucleic acids through covalent modification.
Adults: 5 mg orally three times daily for 5 days.
Not established; BETAPRONE is an experimental agent with no approved dosing. In clinical trials, doses of 0.5-2 mg/m² IV weekly have been used.
