Aphthasol (amlexanox) is an anti-inflammatory agent that inhibits the formation and release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine and leukotrienes from mast cells, neutrophils, and other inflammatory cells. It also inhibits the activation of eosinophils and neutrophils, and reduces cytokine production, thereby suppressing the immune response involved in aphthous ulcer formation.
Topical corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties. Binds to glucocorticoid receptors, modulating gene expression to inhibit phospholipase A2, reduce prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis, and suppress cytokine production.
Adults: 5 mg orally three times daily for 5 days.
Topical: Apply a thin layer to affected area once or twice daily. Maximum: 30-60 g per week. Not for use >2 consecutive weeks or on >50% of body surface.
