Betaxolol is a cardioselective beta-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist. In ophthalmic use, it reduces intraocular pressure by decreasing the production of aqueous humor, likely through blockade of beta-2 receptors in the ciliary epithelium.
Competitive beta-blocker with alpha1-blocking activity; decreases cardiac output, reduces peripheral vascular resistance.
Instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily.
6.25 mg orally twice daily, titrated up to a maximum of 25 mg twice daily for heart failure; 12.5 mg orally once daily for hypertension, titrated to 25-50 mg daily.
