BSS PLUS vs ELLIOTTS B SOLUTION
Comparing the clinical profiles, pharmacokinetic behaviors, and safety indices of these two therapeutic agents.
BSS PLUS (Balanced Salt Solution Plus) is an intraocular irrigating solution containing glutathione, bicarbonate, and glucose. It maintains corneal endothelial cell integrity and function during intraocular surgery by providing a physiological ionic composition (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, phosphate) and metabolic substrates (dextrose, glutathione). Glutathione acts as a reducing agent to protect against oxidative stress.
Elliotts B Solution is a sterile, non-pyrogenic solution used primarily for intrathecal administration of methotrexate or cytarabine. It acts as a diluent to maintain physiological pH and osmolality, thereby reducing chemical arachnoiditis.
Intraocular irrigation during surgery: 500 mL bottle, use as needed to maintain intraocular volume and pressure. No systemic dose.
Intrathecal administration: 25-50 mg methotrexate (as component of ELLIOTTS B SOLUTION) intrathecally once daily for 2-3 days, then weekly for 2-3 weeks; dose may be repeated based on CSF methotrexate levels and clinical response.

Not applicable; components are endogenous electrolytes with rapid renal clearance. Clinical context: constant infusion maintains steady-state concentrations without accumulation.
2.5–4 hours in adults with normal renal function; prolonged in renal impairment (up to 20 hours in anuria).
Renal elimination of electrolytes and components (e.g., sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium) follows their respective physiological clearance. No active drug excretion as BSS PLUS is a balanced salt solution.
Renal (100% as unchanged drug) via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion; no biliary or fecal elimination.
