BSS vs BSS PLUS
Comparing the clinical profiles, pharmacokinetic behaviors, and safety indices of these two therapeutic agents.
BSS (Balanced Salt Solution) is an ophthalmic irrigating solution that provides essential ions (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, acetate, citrate) to maintain cellular osmotic balance and pH during intraocular surgery. It buffers pH and prevents cellular edema by mimicking normal aqueous humor composition.
BSS PLUS (Balanced Salt Solution Plus) is an intraocular irrigating solution containing glutathione, bicarbonate, and glucose. It maintains corneal endothelial cell integrity and function during intraocular surgery by providing a physiological ionic composition (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, phosphate) and metabolic substrates (dextrose, glutathione). Glutathione acts as a reducing agent to protect against oxidative stress.
Intraocular irrigation during surgery: 500 mL or as needed to maintain ocular pressure and clarity.
Intraocular irrigation during surgery: 500 mL bottle, use as needed to maintain intraocular volume and pressure. No systemic dose.

Not applicable; BSS components are endogenous and rapidly equilibrated; half-life not defined for the solution as a whole.
Not applicable; components are endogenous electrolytes with rapid renal clearance. Clinical context: constant infusion maintains steady-state concentrations without accumulation.
BSS (Balanced Salt Solution) components are eliminated renally; for electrolytes (Na+, Cl-, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+), >90% renal excretion; bicarbonate is converted to CO2 and exhaled (15-20%) or renally excreted (80-85%).
Renal elimination of electrolytes and components (e.g., sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium) follows their respective physiological clearance. No active drug excretion as BSS PLUS is a balanced salt solution.
