It is thought to absorb light and protect the skin from UV-induced damage, though its exact mechanism in erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) involves increasing skin tolerance to sunlight by reducing photosensitivity.
5-60 mg orally once daily, titrated to the lowest effective dose. Maintenance: 5-20 mg daily.
Intravenous: 200 mg bolus over 5 minutes, then 1.6 mg/min continuous infusion for 24 hours. Oral: 80 mg three times daily.
