Mechanism of Action
DEXTROSE 5%, SODIUM CHLORIDE 0.33% AND POTASSIUM CHLORIDE 30MEQ IN PLASTIC CONTAINER

Dextrose provides glucose for cellular metabolism, replenishing energy stores and correcting hypoglycemia. Sodium chloride and potassium chloride restore electrolyte balance, maintaining osmolality and membrane potentials.

Aminophylline is a complex of theophylline and ethylenediamine. Theophylline acts as a non-selective phosphodiesterase inhibitor, increasing intracellular cyclic AMP levels, leading to bronchodilation. Narrow therapeutic index; serum theophylline levels must be monitored to avoid toxicity. Risk of seizures, cardiac arrhythmias, and death, especially at high serum concentrations. Caution in patients with hepatic impairment, congestive heart failure, cor pulmonale, fever, and in the elderly. Drug interactions with cimetidine, fluoroquinolones, macrolides, oral contraceptives, and other CYP1A2 inhibitors can increase toxicity.

Clinically, this interaction necessitates close monitoring for signs of gastrointestinal injury when these agents are coadministered."
