HEXABRIX

Hexabrix is an ionic, high-osmolar iodinated contrast agent that attenuates X-rays, enhancing vascular and tissue contrast during radiographic procedures. Its mechanism is physical rather than pharmacological, based on iodine's atomic number and density.

Food Interactions

However, in patients with diabetes taking metformin, metformin should be withheld for 48 hours after contrast administration and only resumed after renal function is re-evaluated.

Key pearls: (1) Monitor renal function before administration due to risk of contrast-induced nephropathy; (2) Prehydrate patients with normal saline to reduce nephrotoxicity; (3) Have emergency equipment available for hypersensitivity reactions; (4) Avoid in patients with known iodine allergy or prior reaction to contrast; (5) Do not mix with other medications in the same syringe; (6) For intrathecal use, ensure proper patient positioning to minimize cephalad flow; (7) Use with caution in patients with sickle cell disease, pheochromocytoma, or hyperthyroidism.

HEXABRIX
