Magnesium sulfate causes decreased release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, reducing muscle contractility. It also blocks calcium channels, leading to vasodilation and anticonvulsant effects.
Inhibits DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, thereby interfering with bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination.
IV: 1-4 g as a 10-20% solution, rate not exceeding 1 g/min; for eclampsia: 4-5 g IV bolus then 1-2 g/hour IV infusion.
