Dextrose is a monosaccharide that provides caloric support. Lactated Ringer's solution contains sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, and lactate in a balanced electrolyte solution; lactate is metabolized to bicarbonate in the liver, providing an alkalinizing effect.
Potassium chloride (KCl) replaces potassium ions, which are essential for maintaining cellular membrane potential, nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, and acid-base balance. Dextrose 5% provides a source of calories and water for hydration.
Potassium chloride 20 mEq in dextrose 5% and lactated Ringer's solution, intravenous infusion over at least 1 hour, typically given as 20 mEq per dose, administered no faster than 10 mEq/h. Frequency depends on serum potassium levels, typically every 4-6 hours.
