LACRISERT
Clinical safety rating: caution
Comprehensive clinical and safety monograph for LACRISERT (LACRISERT).
LACRISERT (hydroxypropyl cellulose ophthalmic insert) acts as a lubricant to stabilize and thicken the precorneal tear film, prolonging tear film breakup time and protecting the ocular surface. It does not have pharmacological activity.
| Metabolism | Hydroxypropyl cellulose is a non-metabolized polymer that is eliminated via nasolacrimal drainage or expelled from the eye. |
| Excretion | Not systemically absorbed; no renal or biliary elimination. |
| Half-life | Not applicable; local ocular insert, no systemic half-life. |
| Protein binding | Not applicable; local action without systemic absorption. |
| Volume of Distribution | Not applicable; local administration only. |
| Bioavailability | Not applicable; administered as ocular insert, no systemic bioavailability. |
| Onset of Action | Ocular: 1-2 hours after insertion. |
| Duration of Action | Ocular: Up to 24 hours with once-daily insertion. |
One 5 mg ophthalmic insert placed into the inferior cul-de-sac of the eye once daily.
| Dosage form | INSERT |
| Renal impairment | No dosage adjustment required for renal impairment. |
| Liver impairment | No dosage adjustment required for hepatic impairment. |
| Pediatric use | Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established. |
| Geriatric use | No specific dosage adjustment recommended; use with caution due to potential age-related ocular surface changes. |
| 1st trimester | Consult provider |
| 2nd trimester | Consult provider |
| 3rd trimester | Consult provider |
Clinical note
Comprehensive clinical and safety monograph for LACRISERT (LACRISERT).
| Breastfeeding | Use with caution; M/P ratio unknown. Minimal systemic absorption suggests low risk to nursing infant. |
| Teratogenic Risk | No evidence of teratogenicity; systemic absorption minimal. Risk to fetus in all trimesters is negligible. |
| Fetal Monitoring | No specific monitoring required; routine prenatal care. |
