Morphine sulfate is a full opioid agonist that binds to mu-opioid receptors (MOR) in the central nervous system (CNS), inhibiting ascending pain pathways and altering pain perception and emotional response to pain. It also activates delta and kappa receptors, contributing to analgesia and side effects.

| Morphine is excreted into breast milk in low concentrations. Occasional low doses are likely compatible with breastfeeding; however, use caution with high doses or repeated administration, as infant sedation and respiratory depression are possible. Monitor infant for drowsiness, feeding difficulties, and weight gain. The American Academy of Pediatrics considers morphine compatible with breastfeeding. |
