General Adult
Diagnosis
1.
Clinical Features
Irritating, productive cough with scanty mucoid sputum. Chest tightness, wheezing. Moderate fever, NO tachypnoea/dyspnoea. Mostly viral.
2.
Secondary Bacterial Infection Signs
Fever > 38.5°C, dyspnoea, purulent expectorations.
Treatment
1.
Mild (Viral)
Paracetamol 1 g every 4-6 hours (max: 4 g daily). Plenty of oral fluids. Local remedies (honey, ginger).
2.
Suspected Bacterial Infection (or high-risk patient)
Amoxicillin 500 mg every 8 hours (Child: 40 mg/kg every 12 hours). OR Doxycycline 100 mg every 12 hours (Child >8 years: 2 mg/kg).
