General Adult

Diagnosis

Clinical Features

Abdominal discomfort, small hard stools passed irregularly under strain. Can cause haemorrhoids/fissures. Alarm features: Signs of intestinal obstruction, confusion, abnormal vitals, rectal bleeding/mass, haem positive stool, weight loss, age >45 with no colon cancer screening.

Treatment

1.

No Alarm Features / Chronic

High dietary fibre, adequate fluid intake. Bisacodyl: 10 mg at night until stool is passed (Child 5-12 yrs: 5 mg suppository only). Contraindicated in acute abdomen. Oral or rectal lactulose (faster relief).

2.

Alarm Features / Severe

Refer to hospital for specialist management.
