General Pediatric
Diagnosis
1.
Clinical Features
3 or more loose watery stools in 24 hrs. Dysentery (bloody). Persistent (>14 days). Abdominal cramps, dehydration (sunken eyes, poor skin elasticity). Red flags: fever, dysentery, shock, travel history.
Treatment
1.
Hydration
Prevent/correct dehydration with ORS or IV fluids according to treatment plans A, B, or C. Find and treat the cause.
2.
Zinc Supplementation
Routinely use zinc supplementation, 20 mg/day for children >6 months for 10-14 days.
3.
Persistent/Chronic Diarrhoea
Vitamin A (6-11mo: 100,000 IU; 1-6yr: 200,000 IU). Adults only: Codeine phosphate 30 mg every 8-12 hours as required.
