Infantile Epilepsy — United States (Pediatric population)
For an infant with new-onset seizures
Combine the history and exam with early use of magnetic resonance imaging, EEG, and genetic testing to help classify the epilepsy syndrome
In patients with an unknown epilepsy etiology
Genetic testing should be considered before the initiation of valproate in order to exclude pathogenic variants of polymerase gamma disorder (POLG).
Periodic re-evaluation of the etiology of refractory seizures and re-analysis to determine candidacy for nonpharmacologic therapy is recommended.
