Evidence-based management of Intestinal Obstruction according to Uganda Clinical Guidelines 2023

Pre-operative

Nil by mouth. NGT decompression. IV fluids (NS/RL) to correct deficit. Insert urinary catheter.

Antibiotics

Ceftriaxone 2 g IV once daily + Metronidazole 500 mg IV every 8 hours.

Pain Relief

Pethidine 50-100 mg IV or IM if in severe colicky pain.

Surgery

Laparotomy if no improvement after 72h or if fecolent NGT aspirate.
