Clinical management of Mastitis and Breast Abscess in Uganda

Mastitis (Treatment)

Cloxacillin 500 mg 6 hourly for 10 days. If penicillin allergic, use Erythromycin 500 mg every 6 hours.

Breastfeeding

Stop breastfeeding on affected side but express and discard milk. Continue breastfeeding on the normal side.

Breast Abscess

Refer for Incision and Drainage (I&D). Warm compresses for pain relief.

General

Paracetamol 1 g every 8 hours for 3 days.
