Diagnosis and treatment protocols for Pyogenic Arthritis in Uganda

Cloxacillin

50 mg/kg every 6 hours.

Management

Admit and immobilise affected joint. Relieve pain and fever with paracetamol or ibuprofen.

First Line Antibiotic

Cloxacillin 500 mg IV every 6 hours for 1-2 weeks, then switch to oral for at least 4 weeks.

If Gonococcal suspected

Ceftriaxone 1 g IV daily for 1 week.

Surgical

Daily aspiration of joint or surgical drainage if required.
