Emergency Management

Diagnosis
Suspect when ascites increases, fever, abdominal pain, worsening encephalopathy. Ascitic tap: Neutrophil count > 250/mm3.
2.
Treatment
IV antibiotics 5-10 days: Ceftriaxone 1-2 g daily (+ Metronidazole 500mg IV 8-hourly if needed). Albumin infusion 1 g/kg to prevent hepatorenal syndrome. AVOID Gentamicin and NSAIDs.
