General Adult
Diagnosis

Clinical Features
Acute bloody mucoid diarrhoea. Fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps. Tenesmus (desire to defecate without significant faeces). Toxaemia. S. flexneri may be complicated with Reiter’s syndrome (urethritis, conjunctivitis, arthritis).
Treatment

General Care
Oral or IV rehydration as appropriate.

Pharmacological Treatment
Ciprofloxacin 500 mg every 12 hours for 5 days. OR Cotrimoxazole 960 mg every 12 hours for 5 days. OR Nalidixic acid 1 g every 6 hours for 5 days. Children: Ciprofloxacin 15 mg/kg every 12 hours.
