Clinical Details
Section 1
When to Use
When to Use
Defining the depth of response (CR, PR, SD, PD) in patients with aggressive or indolent NHL.
End-of-treatment assessment using PET-CT (for FDG-avid lymphomas) or CT (for non-avid lymphomas).
Standardizing response reporting in clinical trials.
Patient Population
Adult and pediatric patients undergoing immunochemo- or targeted therapy for lymphoma.
When Not to Rely on This Score Alone
Interim PET — while Lugano defines response, "interim" PET (e.g., after 2 cycles) requires specific Deauville score interpretation for therapy escalation/de-escalation.
CLL response — CLL has its own dedicated (iwCLL) response criteria.

Formula & Logic
Response Categories (PET-based)
Category
Nodal Response
Bone Marrow
CR (Complete)
Deauville 1, 2, or 3 with or without a residual mass.
Normal by PET/Morphology.
PR (Partial)
Deauville 4 or 5 with reduced uptake from baseline and reduced size.
No specific requirement; residual PET uptake ok.
SD (Stable)
Deauville 4 or 5 with no significant change in uptake or size.
N/A
PD (Progressive)
Deauville 4 or 5 with increase in uptake OR any new FDG-avid lesion.
New or recurrent involvement.
Section 3
Pearls/Pitfalls
The Residual Mass
One of the most important aspects of Lugano/Cheson 2014 is that a residual anatomical mass does NOT preclude a Complete Response (CR) if the PET is negative (Deauville 1–3). This reflects that residual fibrosis is common even after successful therapy.

Cheson BD et al. • Journal of Clinical Oncology. 2014;32(27):3059-68.
Updates the previous Cheson 2007 (IWG) criteria by formally integrating PET-CT and the 5-point Deauville scale as the primary modality for response assessment in FDG-avid histologies.
