Ganzoni Formula: Standard method for estimating the total iron dose needed to correct anemia and replenish iron stores. Note: Individual products may have specific dosing maximums.
Guidelines & Evidence
Clinical Details
Section 1
When to Use
Clinical Use
Calculating total iron deficit in patients with iron deficiency anemia (IDA).
Determining the total dose of parenteral (IV) iron required for replacement.
Section 2
Formula & Logic
Calculation
Total Iron Deficit (mg) = Body Weight (kg) × (Target Hb - Actual Hb) (g/dL) × 2.4 + Iron Stores (mg)
Parameters
Factor 2.4: Derived from blood volume (approx 7% of body weight) and Hb iron content (0.34%).
Target Hb: Usually 15 g/dL (or 13 g/dL depending on local guidelines).
Iron Stores: Usually 500 mg (if body weight > 35 kg).
