Prognostic Importance

What is the GPA?

The Graded Prognostic Assessment (GPA) is a simplified, user-friendly tool developed by the RTOG (Radiation Therapy Oncology Group) to estimate the survival of patients with brain metastases. It was designed to be more objective and quantitative than the older RPA (Recursive Partitioning Analysis). The original GPA uses four simple criteria: Age, Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS), number of brain metastases, and the presence of extracranial metastases.

The Scoring System (Original GPA)

Criteria0 Points0.5 Points1.0 Point
Age (years)> 6050 – 60< 50
KPS (%)< 7070 – 8090 – 100
Number of Brain Mets> 32 – 31

Related Scores in Practice

In clinical practice, this assessment is frequently evaluated alongside other validated measures. Depending on the patient's presentation and specific diagnostic requirements, you may also need to utilize the Ds Gpa Index, Rpa Grading Brain Mets or the SRS Dose Selection (RTOG) to formulate a comprehensive care plan.
