Overview & Clinical Context
Definition & Clinical Utility
The Genitourinary Pain Index (GUPI) is a validated, patient-reported outcome measure designed to quantify symptom severity in individuals with urological chronic pelvic pain syndromes (UCPPS). It is applicable to both men and women and is widely used in conditions such as interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) and chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS).
Why GUPI Matters
Provides standardized assessment of pain, urinary symptoms, and quality of life
Allows objective tracking of symptom progression over time
Facilitates monitoring of treatment response in clinical practice and trials
Applicable to both sexes (unlike original NIH-CPSI)
Correlates strongly with patient global impression of improvement (PGI-I)
In clinical practice, this assessment is frequently evaluated alongside other validated measures. Depending on the patient's presentation and specific diagnostic requirements, you may also need to utilize the Ipss Score to formulate a comprehensive care plan.
