When to Use

All adult inpatients on medical, surgical, and obstetric wards

Routine vital sign assessment during nursing observations

Triggered by clinical deterioration for rapid response escalation

Transfer and handover documentation in NHS and Australian hospital systems

NHS Mandate

NEWS2 is mandated by NHS England (2017) and recommended by the Royal College of Physicians as the standard early warning system for all adult acute hospitals. It formally replaced NEWS (2012).
