When to Use

When to Use

Baseline functional assessment at admission for inpatient rehabilitation.
Serial measurement of functional recovery after stroke, hip fracture, or deconditioning.
Discharge planning — determines level of care required (home, subacute, nursing facility).
Research and quality improvement in rehabilitation medicine.

Primary Use Context

The Barthel Index measures performance in basic activities of daily living (ADLs). It does NOT measure higher-order function, cognition, or social participation — use the Lawton IADL for those domains.

Related Scores in Practice

In clinical practice, this assessment is frequently evaluated alongside other validated measures. Depending on the patient's presentation and specific diagnostic requirements, you may also need to utilize the Katz Index of Independence in ADLs, Lawton Instrumental ADL Scale, Fim Score or the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) to formulate a comprehensive care plan.
