CAGE Questionnaire

The CAGE questionnaire was developed by Dr. John A. Ewing and colleagues at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The acronym was coined by Dr. David Mayfield based on the four key questions. First published in 1974 by Mayfield, McLeod, and Hall, it remains one of the most widely recognized alcohol screening instruments worldwide due to its simplicity, brevity, and ease of recall (CAGE). The questionnaire was designed as a quick clinical screening tool that could be easily remembered and administered without any printed forms.
