Clinical Significance

Management of Alcoholic Hepatitis

Alcoholic hepatitis is a severe clinical syndrome characterized by jaundice and liver failure. Mortality in severe cases can exceed 40% at 1 month. Accurate risk stratification is vital for deciding on aggressive treatments like corticosteroids.

Beyond the Maddrey DF

While the Maddrey Discriminant Function (mDF) is the gold standard for initiating steroids, it is a binary "severe vs non-severe" tool. The ABIC score provides a continuous risk scale, allowing for more granular patient management.

Age and Kidney Function

ABIC recognizes that Age and Renal function (Creatinine) are independent predictors of survival in AH—two factors that the traditional Maddrey score ignores.
