Clinical Significance

Diagnosis of Autoimmune Hepatitis

AIH is a chronic liver disease characterized by interface hepatitis, hypergammaglobulinemia, and autoantibodies. Without treatment, it can progress rapidly to cirrhosis and liver failure.

Simplifying the Complex

The original 1999 criteria included 13 parameters, making them difficult to use in daily practice. The 2008 simplified criteria allow for rapid, reliable diagnosis at the bedside.

A Diagnosis of Exclusion

AIH is often diagnosed only after other causes of liver injury (Viral, Toxic, Metabolic) have been ruled out. The simplified score enforces this by awarding points for viral hepatitis exclusion.
