When to Use

Baseline assessment for athletes entering a new sport or transitioning to higher competition levels (e.g., high school to club).

Key Indication - Pre-Participation Cardiovascular Screening

The AHAPPS Youth Athlete Profile incorporates a 14-element cardiovascular screening (based on AHA recommendations) to detect conditions associated with sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in youth athletes. Key red flags include exertional syncope, unexplained seizures, family history of SCA in first-degree relatives <50 years, and physical exam findings such as heart murmurs, Marfanoid habitus, or diminished femoral pulses. A positive screen warrants further evaluation (ECG, echocardiogram) and cardiology referral before clearance.

When Not to Use / Contraindications

Acute medical emergency (e.g., suspected cardiac event, anaphylaxis) – immediate emergency care supersedes profiling.

Athletes with known, diagnosed cardiovascular disease (e.g., hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, long QT syndrome) – these require specialist clearance, not screening.

Symptomatic acute illness (fever, active infection) – defer until resolution to avoid false positives on functional tests.

Inability to perform physical assessment due to acute injury or pain – profile may be invalid until recovery.

Age <8 years or >18 years – tool not validated outside this range.
