When to Use

Pre-participation screening for athletes in high-intensity sports (e.g., soccer, basketball, rugby) to identify those at risk for overtraining syndrome.

Monitoring of training load and recovery in elite and collegiate athletes during competitive seasons.

Assessment of psychological and physiological stress responses in athletes presenting with unexplained performance decline, fatigue, or recurrent illness.

Screening for early signs of burnout or staleness in endurance athletes (e.g., marathon runners, cyclists, swimmers).

Longitudinal surveillance of training adaptation in athletes undergoing periodized training programs.

Key Indication - Overtraining Syndrome Risk Stratification

The PARS-3 (Profile of Athlete Recovery and Stress) screening tool is primarily indicated for the early detection of overtraining syndrome (OTS) in athletes. A total score ≥ 54 (out of 90) suggests high stress and low recovery, warranting immediate intervention to prevent progression to OTS. The tool is recommended by the European College of Sport Science (ECSS) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for monitoring athlete well-being.

When Not to Use / Contraindications

Acute medical emergencies (e.g., cardiac event, acute infection) – address immediate medical needs first.

Athletes with diagnosed psychiatric disorders (e.g., major depression) without concurrent clinical evaluation, as scores may be confounded.

Use as a standalone diagnostic tool for OTS – must be combined with objective physiological markers (e.g., resting heart rate, HRV, blood biomarkers).
