When to Use

Pre-participation screening for athletes training or competing in hot and humid environments (e.g., summer sports, endurance events, outdoor tournaments).

Real-time monitoring of environmental heat stress during practice or competition to guide activity modifications and prevent exertional heat illness.

Risk stratification for heat-related conditions such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and exertional heat stroke.

Implementation of heat acclimatization protocols and scheduling adjustments based on forecasted heat index values.

Surveillance in athletic training facilities, military training camps, and occupational settings where heat stress is a concern.

Key Indication - Exertional Heat Stroke Prevention

The Heat Index is a critical tool for preventing exertional heat stroke (EHS), the leading cause of preventable death in athletes. According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA), when the heat index exceeds 90°F (32°C), the risk of EHS increases significantly, and activity modifications (e.g., increased rest breaks, reduced intensity, removal of equipment) are recommended. At heat index ≥105°F (41°C), strenuous exercise should be canceled or moved to an air-conditioned environment.

When Not to Use / Contraindications

Do not use as a sole predictor of individual heat illness risk; individual factors (e.g., hydration status, acclimatization, medical history) must be considered.

Not applicable for indoor environments with controlled temperature and humidity unless conditions mimic outdoor heat stress.

Invalid when wind speed is high (>10 mph) as the heat index formula assumes calm conditions; use Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) instead.

Unreliable at low humidity (<20%) or high altitude where evaporative cooling differs; WBGT is preferred.

Do not use for cold stress assessment; the heat index is only defined for temperatures ≥80°F (27°C).
