When to Use
The Björck classification (updated in 2013/2016 by WSACS) is the international standard for describing the "open abdomen" or laparostomy. It categorizes the abdomen based on two critical factors: the presence of adhesions (fixity) and the degree of contamination.
The primary goal of classifying the open abdomen is to guide management toward early definitive fascial closure and prevent the development of a "frozen abdomen" or enteroatmospheric fistula.
Related Scores in Practice
In clinical practice, this assessment is frequently evaluated alongside other validated measures. Depending on the patient's presentation and specific diagnostic requirements, you may also need to utilize the Abdominal Compartment Syndrome, Laparostomy Management, or the Pati Score to formulate a comprehensive care plan.
