When to Use
The Predictive Salvage Index (PSI) was developed in 1987 to assist surgeons in identifying mangled lower extremities with a poor prognosis for salvage. It specifically targets injuries with combined orthopedic and vascular components, aiming to prevent the morbidity of prolonged, unsuccessful reconstruction attempts.
A PSI score ≥ 8 is the historical threshold indicating a high probability of salvage failure and the need for primary amputation.
Related Scores in Practice
In clinical practice, this assessment is frequently evaluated alongside other validated measures. Depending on the patient's presentation and specific diagnostic requirements, you may also need to utilize the Mess Score, Nisssa Score, Lsi Score, or the Abi Trauma to formulate a comprehensive care plan.
