Hypocalcaemia characteristically prolongs the ST segment and the QT interval by increasing the duration of phase 2 of the ventricular action potential. Unlike other electrolytes, it typically does not change the T-wave morphology initially.
Severe hypomagnesaemia induces PTH resistance and inhibits PTH secretion. If magnesium is low, hypocalcaemia will NOT resolve with calcium/vitamin D alone. Always check and replace Magnesium concurrently.
