The IDF criteria (2006) differ from the older NCEP/ATPIII definition by making central obesity a mandatory requirement, whereas NCEP allows any 3 of 5 criteria. Consequently, IDF may be more sensitive for detecting metabolic risk in lean individuals with visceral fat.
Weight loss and increased physical activity are the primary therapeutic targets. Managing individual components (BP, Lipids) is secondary to reversing the underlying insulin resistance and visceral obesity.
