Clinical Context

We think this might be relevant to the clinical guidance for HPV/p16-Positive Oropharynx Staging.

HPV/p16 Oropharynx

HPV/P16AJCC 8th Edition Oropharyngeal Staging

Pathologic Group

Note: This staging system applies ONLY to p16+ oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Non-HPV related (p16-) cancers are staged using a different AJCC 8th Ed system.

When to Use

Clinical Use

Staging of all squamous cell carcinomas of the oropharynx (tonsil, base of tongue).
Requires p16 immunohistochemistry (IHC) confirmation on the biopsy specimen.
Used to guide the discussion on treatment de-escalation clinical trials.

Related Scores in Practice

In clinical practice, this assessment is frequently evaluated alongside other validated measures. Depending on the patient's presentation and specific diagnostic requirements, you may also need to utilize the TNM 9th (Nasopharynx), ATA Thyroid Risk or the CTCAE v5.0 to formulate a comprehensive care plan.
